Clicks Communicator to Ship in December as Price Rises to $649
Clicks plans to ship its BlackBerry-inspired Communicator in December with more RAM, a larger battery and Android 17. The price will rise from $499 to $649 on October 1.
Engadget reported that the Communicator will ship with 12GB of RAM, up from the 8GB originally announced, and a 4,350mAh battery, up from 4,000mAh. The battery is rated for more than 800 charge cycles. It will run Android 17 out of the box with software support through Android 20 and five years of security updates.
The phone pairs a 4.03-inch 120Hz AMOLED display with a physical keyboard, a design meant to evoke older BlackBerry models. It uses a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chip and has 256GB of internal storage with microSD expansion. It also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack. The keyboard surface is touch-sensitive for swiping to scroll and navigate, and the spacebar doubles as a fingerprint sensor. Clicks offers English QWERTY, French AZERTY, German QWERTZ, Korean and Arabic layouts.
Clicks positions the Communicator as a second phone, one better suited for messages and calls than for endless scrolling, according to Engadget. The company is not trying to compete directly with flagship phones; it calls the device “a new kind of mobile communicator.” Engadget reported that not every Android app will fit its squarish aspect ratio, its processor is a notch or two below flagship level, and it lacks a multi-lens rear camera array, using a 50MP rear camera and a 24MP front-facing camera.
The device can still be reserved for its original $499 price, but the price will rise to $649 on October 1, Engadget reported. Pre-orders are available on the company website, and reservation holders can configure their phones now, choosing colors, keyboard layouts and charging covers. A demo video is also available.
