CNET Corrects Report: Siri AI Will Not Reach the Original HomePod mini

CNET corrected its report and confirmed Siri AI will be exclusive to the HomePod mini 2, whose S10 chip is built to handle those requests, and will not come to the original S5-based HomePod mini.

The original article stated that "the current S5-powered HomePod Mini will also get Siri AI compatibility later this year, along with updates to iOS 27.2." That claim drew scrutiny because Apple's website and press releases contained no indication that the first-generation HomePod mini would support Siri AI. Apple had explicitly said Siri AI would come to certain older Apple TV 4K models, and made no comparable assurance for HomePod mini owners.

9to5Mac, which reported the discrepancy, said it reached out to Apple for comment. While awaiting a response, CNET updated its article with a correction. The revised text reads: "However, users of older HomePod Minis won't be getting the more advanced Siri AI features. The HomePod Mini 2, with its faster S10 processor, is made to process Siri AI requests, and the same abilities won't be available on older HomePods."

The correction leaves Siri AI as a feature tied to the second-generation HomePod mini and its S10 chip. The first HomePod mini debuted six years ago and runs on the S5 chip, which is dated for AI workloads. 9to5Mac noted that Apple Watch models require considerably newer chips to support Siri AI, a precedent that pointed against the original claim.

9to5Mac also published a comparison of the HomePod mini 2 and the original HomePod mini, and asked readers whether Siri AI support would affect their decision to upgrade.
