Code in Android 17 Beta Points to Phone Unlock for Googlebooks
Code in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 points to a Googlebook feature that unlocks the laptop using a nearby Android phone.
The outlet reported on October 8, 2026, that setup screens it reviewed label the capability Phone Unlock for Googlebooks. Those screens indicate the laptop would unlock automatically when the user opens the lid, moves the mouse or presses a key, instead of requiring a password to be typed each time. After each unlock, the paired Android phone would receive a notification, according to the same screens.
Android Authority said the feature remains unannounced. The code was spotted in a beta build of Android, and the outlet did not report a release date or say which products would receive it.
The reported work follows a pattern already established in Apple's ecosystem, where a Mac can be unlocked with an Apple Watch. Android Authority described that capability as an example of a small convenience that becomes difficult to give up once it is available, since typing a password afterward feels outdated. Google's version, as described in the beta code, would rely on an Android phone rather than a watch, and the two devices would be paired for the unlock to occur.
The finding comes from the outlet's Authority Insights series, which publishes app teardowns, leaks and exclusive reports. Google has not commented on the discovery, and no second source has been cited for the screens or the feature name. The description of how the unlock would be triggered, including the lid, mouse and keyboard actions and the notification to the phone, rests on the setup screens reviewed by Android Authority.
