Cohere AI chief: smaller players outside US and China must join forces to build alternatives after Aleph Alpha merger.

Pineau’s argument is that companies and countries outside the US and China cannot rely on the largest AI model developers to serve their interests. She said smaller players need to combine efforts to build alternatives that can compete with the dominant model makers. The Cohere-Aleph Alpha merger is presented as part of that push, bringing together a Canadian AI company and a German AI startup.

Sifted quoted Pineau saying: “US and China will hold us ‘by the throat’ if we don’t develop local capabilities.” The comment reflects her view that regions outside the two AI powers need their own capacity, rather than depending on models built in the US or China.
