Commodore 77: Cyberpunk 2077-themed retro computer unveiled with exclusive 8-bit demo
The Commodore 77, a Cyberpunk 2077-themed Commodore 64 Ultimate, is up for pre-order at $377, featuring an exclusive 8-bit demo and 77 MHz FPGA.
The special edition's battered yellow-and-black casing is inspired by Seocho Electronics from the Cyberpunk universe, down to suitably dystopian-looking keys. A "Shard" cartridge contains an exclusive 8-bit Cyberpunk demo created by Commodore and Arise Designs, featuring 24-channel stereo SID music from LukHash. The demo is not a full game, but the idea of seeing Night City on hardware descended from a computer launched more than four decades ago has a certain appeal, Android Authority noted.
Under the hood, the Commodore 77 includes an upgraded AMD Artix 7 XC7A100T processor capable of reaching 77 MHz. The package also includes a themed spiral-bound manual featuring Cyberpunk-inspired BASIC programs and lore, Commodore x Cyberpunk 2077 pins and stickers, an extra-long HDMI cable, and a worldwide power adapter that Commodore jokes is compatible with Night City.
The Commodore 77 is based on the revived Commodore 64 Ultimate, which uses an FPGA to recreate the original hardware instead of emulating it in software. It adds modern conveniences such as HDMI, USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet, and can play more than 10,000 retro games, while also allowing users to code in BASIC, make music, and disappear into a less distracting era of computing.
