Copper Peptide Trend Shifts From Creams to Injections Ahead of Science
Injections of copper peptide GHK-Cu are rising on social media, but no human studies confirm safety. Dermatologists caution that unregulated online products carry health risks.
The compound, known as GHK-copper or GHK-Cu, has gained a large social-media following for claims of firmer, wrinkle-free skin and other anti-aging benefits. Some users smear the electric-blue tincture on their faces, while others draw it into syringes. The trend reflects a broader peptide craze in wellness and longevity circles. Topical copper peptide serums and creams have been on the market and studied in human trials for decades; the new shift is injection, sometimes 'stacked' with other peptides promoted for tissue repair.
'I think GHK can have a major role in helping enhance longevity,' Dr. Warren Ladiges, a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, told NPR. 'But injecting yourself without really knowing what it's going to do? I wouldn't do that to myself.'
The peptide has a history stretching back more than fifty years. In the early 1970s, chemist Loren Pickart first isolated GHK, a chain of three amino acids, after noticing that plasma from younger adults revived aging liver cells in the lab. Later studies found GHK-Cu stimulates collagen production, encourages new blood vessel growth and has anti-inflammatory effects. Controlled human trials have focused almost exclusively on skin health and aesthetics, with smaller cosmetic-industry-funded studies showing creams improve skin thickness and elasticity and decrease wrinkles.
Dr. David Goldberg, director of cosmetic dermatology for the Schweiger Dermatology Group, said the science behind the topical is 'very solid' and that GHK-Cu helps bolster collagen, part of the skin's scaffolding, on par with vitamin C and antioxidants.
Pre-clinical research suggests broader promise. In animal studies, GHK-Cu sped wound healing and helped repair lung fibrosis. Ladiges' experiments showed the peptide can stimulate pathways associated with aging and alleviate Alzheimer's symptoms in mouse models. However, efforts to move this work into human longevity trials have been fruitless, partly because GHK-Cu is naturally occurring and difficult to patent without a unique version. Ladiges said it would require huge investment, and that the compound 'is probably never going to get FDA approval.'
Many dermatologists are advising patients to avoid injecting anything until human studies are done. 'I'm not going to sleep well at night, until the human studies are actually done,' Goldberg told NPR. Potential risks include overloading the system with copper or triggering a dangerous immune reaction. Dr. Marisa Garshick at MDCS Dermatology said much of the concern centers on consumers sourcing injectable formulations from unregulated online sellers, with no assurance about quality or dosage.
