Cramer Says Nvidia and Broadcom Are Big Winners from OpenAI's Astra Model Release
CNBC's Jim Cramer says Nvidia and Broadcom benefit most from OpenAI's Astra model rollout, citing Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs and Broadcom's custom-chip partnership.
"One of the things that I think is roiling the market, heavily, today is this new release of OpenAI," Cramer said during CNBC's Morning Meeting. Astra is being touted for advances in cybersecurity and computer skills, and its performance underscores the capability of Nvidia's chips.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a post on X that training Astra used 100,000 Blackwell graphics processing units. "400K GPUs coming online next," he wrote. Cramer expressed frustration that Nvidia shares opened higher before falling 2%, saying "it didn't do anything wrong at all. If anything, it's doing the right thing — it's the reason why OpenAI is doing so well."
Astra also boosts investor confidence in OpenAI's custom silicon partnership with Broadcom. Broadcom shares rose 2.5% on Tuesday. The two companies collaborated on OpenAI's new Jalapeno chip, designed for inference workloads. Broadcom counts Anthropic as an increasingly important customer as well.
Ben Reitzes of Melius Research wrote in a note that "the launch of Astra shows OpenAI is so back." He added that Astra's training on Nvidia Blackwells and OpenAI's repositioning around coding and enterprise "should start to dawn on people that OpenAI has clearly improved its chances for a successful IPO in 2027."
Cramer said investors want to see OpenAI and Anthropic get their financial houses in order ahead of potential IPOs later this year or in early 2027. If they achieve that, Broadcom "is their preferred partner, and we're going to see a stock that goes up much more," he said. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan last week set multiyear AI revenue targets, and Anthropic is projected to be Broadcom's largest custom customer in fiscal 2027 and sustain that into fiscal 2028, with OpenAI rising to No. 2 in fiscal 2028.
"The stock that I think you should be buying is Nvidia," Cramer said, arguing that Nvidia remains the undisputed AI chip leader at an undemanding valuation. He acknowledged concerns that Nvidia's largest customers are turning to custom chip alternatives, but said owning Broadcom helps balance that risk. The AI chip market is not a zero-sum game, he added, and OpenAI and Astra demonstrate that different chips can win.
