Creative Assembly confirms Total War: Warhammer 40,000 diplomacy will take a different form
Creative Assembly says diplomacy in Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will exist in a different form, with players managing local forces and planetary governors. The game launches in 2027.
Battle product owner Dave Petry and lead designer Joy Dey discussed the game with TechRadar Gaming at Gamescom. Petry said the focus for diplomacy in the 40,000 setting is that the Imperium is "an absolutely monstrous bureaucratic nightmare" whose arms need to communicate and coordinate with one another. He said some factions will be extremely belligerent and difficult to get along with, but when players deal with the Imperium, there are local forces and allies they also need to work with and get on board.
Petry also addressed the Astra Militarum, described in the article as the largest military force in the universe. He said being supported by them "means a level of negotiation with the Imperium itself and the local forces that you're fighting around." He added: "In a different form, diplomacy will be present. But when it comes to dealing with outright belligerents, they're obviously tricky points to get through."
Dey said players will also need to deal with planetary representatives and manage their attitude toward them. "There will be things they would like you to do," Dey said. "There will be things that they don't like that you do."
Petry said planetary governors can be problematic, and how a player manages them as a Space Marine, or within a Space Marine chapter, is down to the player. That will then affect the player's renown or reputation with the Imperium, and those things might not always align, which Petry said should put players in "some fun spots."
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.
