DeepMind AI Model Predicts Hurricanes with Unprecedented Accuracy

Google's DeepMind-developed WeatherNext AI model can predict cyclones with a day more lead time than existing models, as shown in a Nature study.

In October 2025, the model, called WeatherNext, correctly forecast that a storm over the Caribbean Sea would intensify into a Category 5 hurricane and hit Jamaica, while other weather models were uncertain. The prediction came five days before landfall, with 80 percent confidence.

Hurricane Melissa subsequently caused catastrophic flooding and landslides across Jamaica. The earlier warning allowed communities in its path to prepare better.

The study shows that WeatherNext gives forecasters, on average, a day more lead time than existing models. Its three-day predictions are as accurate as previous models' two-day predictions, according to the researchers.
