Developer Brings Dolby TrueHD Atmos to Apple TV 4K Through Build-It-Yourself Hack

Developer builds open-source workaround for Dolby TrueHD Atmos on Apple TV 4K, but users must compile it on a Mac.

TechRadar reported that the system does not pass TrueHD through the Apple TV 4K. Instead, it decodes the TrueHD Atmos audio and its timed object metadata, renders the positional data to a fixed 9.1.6 speaker layout, converts the result to Apple's Positional Audio Codec, or APAC, and plays it through native tvOS. The chain is TrueHD Atmos to decoded audio plus timed object metadata, then a fixed 9.1.6 speaker render, then APAC, then native tvOS playback.

APAC is Apple's own positional audio codec, and it is not lossless; TrueHD is lossless, but APAC is not. TechRadar reported that users who tried the system have described the results as impressive. Agathorpt said the spatial audio has worked "amazingly well" on their setup and "sounds excellent," and other Redditors who tried the same software reported good results.

Agathorpt said the goal was to replicate the audio functionality of a closed-source app called Native Player with an open-source alternative. "Keeping the implementation closed... leaves everyone dependent on that vendor for fixes and future support," Agathorpt said, according to TechRadar. "Other players can't reuse or improve that code, and the community can't independently inspect how it handles the audio."

To reproduce it, users need a Mac, Apple's Xcode development software, and their own Apple developer account to sign an app, TechRadar reported. The Apple TV 4K must run tvOS 26 or later, and the movie files must contain 48kHz TrueHD Atmos audio. TechRadar said the full steps are detailed in the project. Agathorpt has emphasized that they did not write all the software involved; the project builds on Superuser404notfound's AetherEngine media engine and LibTrueHD object audio decoder.

The work has been proposed as an extension to the Nuvio media player, and home theater enthusiasts hope it will be implemented for everyone in Nuvio and other tvOS apps. For now, users must build it themselves. TechRadar reported that the process does not appear too difficult, but less technical users may prefer to wait for an app rollout. TechRadar also said the workaround is assumed to work with the new Apple TV 4K (2026) that Apple just announced, though the price increase and lack of major new AV features have not pleased fans.

Editor's Summary

Agathorpt's open-source workaround shows that Dolby TrueHD Atmos can be rendered into Apple's APAC and played on a third-generation Apple TV 4K, although the signal is not lossless by the time it reaches tvOS. The method remains a build-it-yourself project and has been proposed for Nuvio; broader availability would depend on app developers adopting it.
