Discord Develops Game Mode to Cut CPU and GPU Use While Gaming

Game Mode is said to automatically reduce animations and effects after a game launches, a behavior that closely resembles Discord's existing Reduced Motion setting. Reduced Motion already lowers the intensity of animations and hover effects when users navigate the client. Users can also disable hardware acceleration, which prevents the app from using the GPU and is meant to avoid visual glitches such as frame drops in games or performance problems.

The scope of Game Mode remains narrow based on available information. There is no mention that it will lower RAM usage, one of Discord's most common resource complaints. Because Discord is an Electron-based application, its desktop client runs web technology inside a Chromium-based browser engine, the same engine used by Google Chrome. That architecture has long been associated with high memory and resource consumption, and Game Mode as described would not change it.

It is also unclear whether Game Mode will improve performance during screen sharing. Screen sharing is demanding, particularly at higher resolutions, though the article said it is more reasonable than simple voice chat or an app idling in the background and still consuming memory. TechRadar noted that in-game frame rates can suffer during screen share even below 1080p, and the problem is more serious on lower-end systems with less RAM. A capture card on a separate system or laptop can eliminate the performance problem, but it is not an affordable option for all users.

If Game Mode only acts as an automatic toggle for Reduced Motion while a game is running, TechRadar said Discord still has significant work to do to prevent the desktop app from remaining a resource issue for gamers.
