Discord rolls out revised age verification policy

Discord is rolling out automatic age groups and privacy-focused verification, adding restrictions for teen accounts.

Starting this week, Discord will place users into Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed groups based on markers such as how long the account has existed, the servers they are in and their general activity levels. The company said it will not access messages or calls to make an age estimate, and a user's age group will not appear on their profile or be shared with other server members. Users can check which group they have been placed in under the Account Status section of User Settings, and Discord expects about 90 percent of its audience to need no further action if they are sorted correctly.

Users placed in the Unconfirmed category will have several ways to prove they are older than 18, depending on regional restrictions. Those options may include confirmation through a credit card, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet or the AgeKey credential service, as well as ID scans or video selfies. Discord said it will require third-party age assurance vendors to permanently delete a user's information once their service is completed, and that any facial age estimation must run entirely on the user's device.

Teen accounts will face three restrictions. Messages from non-friends will be routed to a message requests inbox, and Discord will show an alert before a user accepts a friend request from someone who does not share mutual friends or membership in a small server. Teens will also be blocked from viewing certain content, including images flagged as sensitive by the platform's content filters and servers, channels or bot commands restricted to adults. A teen's full profile details and activity will be visible only to friends and members of smaller servers. Accounts in the Unconfirmed category will be subject to the first two restrictions until the user confirms their age.

The rollout follows growing interest among social media platforms in limiting minors' access. Discord had planned to enact a policy this year that would have required facial age estimation or an ID scan for users whose adult status could not be confirmed by its internal tools. In February, the company said it was delaying those changes after concerns about privacy and the collection of personal data involved in both verification methods. The revised policy is intended to respond to that community feedback.
