Discord Tests Game Mode to Cut CPU and GPU Load While Gaming

Discord is testing a Game Mode that reduces its CPU and GPU usage while a game is running, with the experimental feature rolling out to users next week.

Screenshots of an option called Game Mode began circulating on social media over the weekend. The description shown next to the Game Mode toggle states that it will "Reduce Discord's CPU and GPU usage while a game is running." By lowering the amount of system resources the chat platform consumes, other software running at the same time should be able to run more smoothly.

The company confirmed the rollout on X, saying it is "aiming to add more resource-saving features over time." Discord did not give a specific date within next week for when users would see the option, and it did not detail how much of a reduction in CPU or GPU usage the mode is expected to deliver.

Discord runs on the Electron web app framework, which uses JavaScript and Chromium to build software. Chromium, the open-source project that also serves as the basis for Google's Chrome and several other browsers, is not known as the most efficient tool for web development. A feature such as Game Mode could produce some performance improvements, particularly when a demanding AAA game is running on the same machine, but there may be a limit to how far Discord can streamline its client on the current architecture.

Discord has not said whether Game Mode will eventually replace existing settings or sit alongside them, nor whether it will be enabled by default. The feature is being described by the company as experimental, meaning its behavior may change before or after it reaches users.
