Discord Updates Markdown Previews to Render Tables and Formatting

Discord now renders uploaded Markdown files with tables and formatting, and adds a 'Move to…' option plus 1GB Nitro uploads.

“When you upload a Markdown (.md) file, you’ll now see the file rendered all nice and neat and pretty instead of with a bunch of symbols,” Discord said, according to The Verge. “This includes tables, formatting, all that good stuff. Totally great for when you’re doing a casual Sunday-night sharing READMEs with your friends.”

The update could be useful for people sharing information about AI projects on Discord. The Verge reported that large language models and AI agents often rely on Markdown files for instructions and context, so clearer previews may help users pass along that material on the service. Discord presented the feature as a convenience for sharing READMEs and similar files.

The same update adds a way to organize servers and channels. Users can right-click an icon in the sidebar and choose a new “Move to…” option, according to The Verge. Discord Nitro members can also upload files as large as 1GB after the update.

The Markdown change follows other efforts to support the format more directly. The Verge reported that Google recently began letting users edit Markdown files in Docs without converting them to the Docs format. Discord’s update focuses on displaying uploaded Markdown files as users expect rather than as raw text.
