DoorDash Details Drone Delivery Launch in Northern California With Chipotle and Popeyes
DoorDash will launch drone deliveries first in northern California, with Chipotle and Popeyes among the first partners.
DoorDash said its drone has six propellers and a cruising noise similar to that of a passing car when it is at delivery height. The company designed the drone to fit the communities it will operate in, according to Engadget.
The company said around 80 percent of restaurant orders available through its platform are small and light enough for drone delivery. Based on estimates from initial tests, DoorDash said it has seen delivery times from the restaurant to the consumer's door average under five minutes. Its delivery management system will consider ground traffic, weather and flight times to determine which orders make the most sense to transport by air.
At the Dash Forward event, DoorDash also said users will be able to text their deliveries through the Messages app on Apple devices instead of using DoorDash's own app or website. The feature expands on the company's Ask DoorDash assistant. It will be available in the United States first, and users can join a waitlist.
DoorDash said businesses will be able to connect the platform to apps and AI agents they use internally to order team lunches and restock items as needed.
The company also said more retailers have partnered with DoorDash to offer clothes, footwear and beauty items for delivery. Macy's, Anthropologie, The North Face, Vans and Timberland are joining the DoorDash Marketplace. Users can also use the platform to send back items through Dasher Returns, which has a flat $8 fee.
