DoorDash Launches Text-to-Order AI Agent and Tests Delivery Drones

DoorDash said Wednesday it is launching an AI agent that lets U.S. users order food through Apple Messages and will begin testing delivery drones with select Northern California restaurants.

The agent is meant to handle more than a familiar order. DoorDash said users can ask for a specific dish or request a local recommendation. The agent will search local spots and suggest a cart based on the prompt, according to the company. It can also text photos of the food it recommends. For group orders, DoorDash said the agent can manage mixed dietary preferences and different quantities in one order.

DoorDash is launching the AI agent as it seeks an edge over rivals Uber Eats and Grubhub. TechCrunch AI reported that the launch also comes amid a growing push to adopt personal AI agents that can handle tasks without requiring users to navigate apps or websites themselves. The text-to-order tool moves part of the ordering process into a messaging thread, where the agent responds to natural-language prompts.

In addition to the new AI agent, DoorDash announced that it will begin testing its delivery drones with select restaurants in Northern California. The drone testing was announced alongside the AI agent. TechCrunch AI reported that the tests will involve select restaurants, without providing further details on timing or partners.
