Dutch Police Arrest 24-Year-Old in Connection With ShinyHunters Hacking Group

Dutch police arrested a 24-year-old Amsterdam man on Sept. 15 in connection with ShinyHunters, the group linked to attacks on Ticketmaster, Rockstar Games and the FBI.

Dutch authorities announced the arrest in a press release but did not name the suspect, and the FBI also did not identify him. Krebs on Security and Reuters reported that police arrested Pepijn van der Stap, a Dutch man convicted of data theft and extortion in 2023. According to Krebs on Security, Van der Stap joined the Dutch cybersecurity company Neo Security after he was released from prison last year. ShinyHunters told Reuters that Van der Stap has “no association” with the group.

Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, described the suspect as one of the group’s alleged leaders and issued a warning to other members. “The longer you stay in this, the more we learn about you. You know how to find us, and we know how to find you,” Leatherman said in a video published Tuesday. “I suggest you reach out first while the choice is still yours.”

Dutch police also said the 24-year-old is suspected of “attempted incitement to commit two murders.” The allegation was included in the police statement about the arrest, which has drawn attention because of the suspect’s reported link to high-profile intrusions. ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for the FBI breach, while the bureau has not confirmed details of that incident beyond the continuing investigation referenced by its director.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote in a post on X that the arrest was generating leads. “As we speak FBI teams are actively working with partners to obtain and execute more leads in the ongoing investigation based on this arrest,” Patel said.

The arrest centers on a suspect whom Dutch police linked to ShinyHunters, a group whose claimed targets have included major entertainment and gaming companies as well as the FBI. The naming of Van der Stap by Krebs on Security and Reuters remains unconfirmed by Dutch authorities and the FBI, and ShinyHunters’ denial of any association with him is a direct dispute with those media reports.
