Dyson unveils £420 toothbrush with in-mouth camera and live footage

Dyson launches £420 toothbrush with in-mouth camera, streaming live footage to an app. Dentists say gadgets don't replace proper brushing.

The toothbrush includes a "100k pixel macro lens camera" and an "anti-gravity mouthwash tank", enabling users to see what their dentist sees and watch footage on the MyDyson app. When the camera detects gaps between teeth, a jet on the stem releases mouth rinse, while the brush head cleans along the gum line. Dyson claims the brush removes up to 72% more plaque than market-leading electric toothbrushes.

James Dyson, the company's founder and chief engineer, said engineers had spent well over a decade understanding oral care regimes. They developed a synthetic "proxy plaque" to test plaque removal. He described flossing as an awkward and time-consuming chore, and said research shows people consistently miss areas where plaque forms, particularly between teeth.

The toothbrush is part of a "complete dental system" with non-foaming toothpaste and mouth rinse, each priced at £8.50, which the company says prevents the camera lens from being obscured. Dyson enters a crowded market that already includes smart brushes such as the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean, which retails at £600 in UK stores.

The British Dental Association warned that high-priced gadgets do not replace a proper routine. Its chair, Eddie Crouch, said: "Patients shouldn't be lulled into thinking the latest gizmos will solve all their oral health problems. Big brands with high price tags are no substitute for a proper routine."
