Dyson Unveils $499 CameraJet Smart Toothbrush With AI-Powered Mouthwash Flossing
Dyson unveils $499 CameraJet, a smart toothbrush that uses a camera and on-device AI to detect gaps between teeth and automatically blast mouthwash into them.
Dyson said the CameraJet works with regular toothpaste and mouthwash, but plans to sell its own non- or low-foaming formulas designed to give the toothbrush's camera a clearer view inside the mouth. The camera sits just below the brush head, has a 100,000-pixel resolution and uses a strobing light. In a feature Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting, the device analyzes 28 live images per second from the camera, without storing them on the device or sending them to the cloud.
When the toothbrush detects a gap between teeth, it emits a cone-shaped blast of mouthwash within 100 milliseconds. According to the report, the blast is wider than those used by typical water flossers, allowing it to remove plaque with less pressure and making the flossing mechanism gentler on enamel and gums.
The replaceable brush heads have softer outer bristles to clean along the gumline and stiffer inner bristles to scrub tooth stains. The brush head oscillates nearly 1,000 times per second, with the angle of oscillation constantly changing. Pricing for replacement heads has not been announced, but each head contains an RFID tag so the CameraJet can track usage and alert users when a replacement is needed every three months.
Dyson also designed the mouthwash reservoir to keep pumping no matter how the brush is held, including upside down. Instead of a tube, an air bladder inside the tank slowly inflates to fill empty space, reduce air pockets and maintain constant pressure. An elaborate docking station recharges the toothbrush and can fill its built-in 12.5 ml mouthwash reservoir in just three seconds.
