E Ink unveils Kaleido 4 color ePaper display; Hanvon M10C II is first tablet to use it

E Ink has announced Kaleido 4, a color ePaper display it says offers twice the color gamut and 50 percent better contrast than the previous version. Hanvon Technology's M10C II is the first tablet to carry the panel.

In a press note, E Ink said the new displays deliver richer color, snappier page refreshes and a level of image quality that produces a "more detailed and fluid ePaper experience," according to a report by Android Authority. The company also said the panels are now suitable for a wider variety of digital content than earlier color ePaper screens.

E Ink described the gamut of Kaleido 4 as twice as large as before, with a volume exceeding 40,000. Android Authority noted that the figure is given without a unit, which makes it difficult to interpret objectively; the practical claim is that the display shows more saturated colors than its predecessor, rather than 40,000 distinct colors.

E Ink's Kaleido series is widely treated as the reference point for color ePaper displays and is used in e-readers from Amazon, BOOX, Kobo and other brands. Kaleido 4 is the next version of that line.

The announcement did not include pricing, a release schedule or full technical specifications for Kaleido 4 panels, and Hanvon has not detailed the M10C II beyond its position as the first tablet built around the new display. Independent measurements of the claimed contrast and color performance were not provided.

E Ink did not say which other device makers plan to adopt Kaleido 4 or when additional ePaper products using the technology are expected to reach the market.
