EcoFlow launches Stream home batteries in UK to support plug-in solar boom

EcoFlow introduced its Stream Series home batteries in the UK, letting households store extra solar power. The 5kWh unit requires professional installation and starts at £1,499 for early birds.

The 5kWh home battery is rated to support up to 5,000W of solar input and 3,000W of electricity output, enough to run appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. If more energy storage is needed, extra units can be added as required.

Despite those power ratings, the Stream batteries are compact: they weigh just 45 kilograms (under 100 pounds), roughly the size of an airplane cabin bag, making them easy to position in garages, utility rooms, or elsewhere.

"The transition to smarter home energy shouldn't be reserved for early adopters," said EcoFlow's Justin Tilley. "Homeowners want to get more from their solar investment, but they also want technology that's simple to understand, easy to integrate into their home and built to grow with them."

With plug-in solar kits legally available in the UK from August 27, the country is on the cusp of a home energy revolution. The current downside of plug-in solar is that, without a battery, any electricity not used immediately is lost. The EcoFlow Stream series solves that problem, even though the installation is not as plug-and-play as the panels themselves. There are hopes that plug-in batteries could get legal approval next.

Notable specifications include a 15-year lifespan, 10,000 charging cycles, an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance, and a 10-year warranty. The batteries can be controlled by a companion app offering management and diagnostic tools, and they also work as uninterruptible power supply units, taking over if the grid electricity is cut.

The EcoFlow Stream home battery is available for preorder today from the EcoFlow website, with early bird prices starting at £1,499. Those discounted prices are set to last until October 7, when the units are expected to start shipping.
