Elgato launches $99.99 Wave Go wireless mic for mobile creators

Elgato launches the $99.99 Wave Go, a 7-gram clip-on wireless mic for mobile creators, taking on DJI’s Mic Mini.

The Wave Go is about the size of an AirPod and weighs seven grams, Elgato says. It clips onto clothes with a magnetic clip and plate. A single button powers the microphone on or mutes it, and double-pressing the button launches the camera app on a phone. Elgato promises “broadcast-quality” audio from a condenser capsule, with support for EQ shift, auto gain, and noise cancellation.

Elgato also created a Smart Handle for the Wave Go, a bundled accessory that turns it into a full-size interview mic. The microphone slots into the top of the handle, which has a power and mute button and an LED indicator for power, mute, and pairing status. The handle also acts as a charger, adding five more charges; at around eight hours per charge, that gives 48 hours in total. A 10-minute quick charge provides around an hour of recording time.

The USB-C receiver is made for phones and works with iPhones, Android devices, and iPads. It connects to the microphone over a 2.4GHz wireless signal rather than Bluetooth, with latency of around 24ms or less, according to The Verge. The included case can secure the Smart Handle, microphone, and USB-C receiver, but it does not have an integrated battery, so the Smart Handle is the main way to charge on the go.

A Wave Go mobile app lets users monitor live audio levels, enable noise reduction, toggle automatic leveling, and check battery status. The microphone can also be used on a desktop PC with Elgato’s Wave Link 3.0 software by plugging the receiver into a USB-C port.

The Wave Go is available today for $99.99, €99.99, or £99.99. A second microphone transmitter is available for $29.99 for recording a second voice.
