Ember Launches Mug 3 With On-Mug Temperature Controls, New Tumbler 2

Ember launches Mug 3 with on-mug temperature controls, dishwasher-safe design and a new Tumbler 2.

The Mug 3 comes in two sizes: a 10-ounce model for $129 and a 14-ounce version for $149. The smaller mug is available in black, white and stainless steel, while the larger size comes in eight colors: sage green, lavender, powder blue, salt blue, sandstone, white, black and matcha green.

The main change is a button on the bottom of the mug that lets users cycle through five preset temperatures without opening the app. The presets start at 125 degrees Fahrenheit and rise by five degrees with each press, up to 145 degrees. TechCrunch reported that this was the feature its reviewer used most, particularly at night when a phone was across the room, and that it also addresses complaints from users who have had connectivity or pairing problems with the Ember app.

The bottom placement drew criticism as well. TechCrunch said the button was not especially easy to press, requiring the mug to be tilted and pressed firmly, a design the reviewer found awkward for a cup holding hot liquid.

For app users, the mug pairs over Bluetooth and offers presets based on the drink, including 136 degrees Fahrenheit for black coffee, 132 degrees for green tea and 142 degrees for lemon water. Users can also create custom temperature presets. Ember introduced its first smart mug in 2016 to keep drinks from cooling while users are distracted.

The Mug 3 also has a sliding lid to help prevent spills and can maintain a selected temperature for up to three hours on one charge. It is not microwave-safe. The Tumbler 2 has a slimmer, taller design intended to fit standard car cup holders, is available in black for $179, and the Travel Mug 2 will remain on sale until supplies run out.

Both products are available on Ember’s website, Target and Amazon.

Ember has expanded its smart drinkware line with the Mug 3, which adds on-mug temperature presets and top-rack dishwasher safety, and the Tumbler 2. The launch keeps Ember’s products in the $129 to $179 range and adds new colors and form factors, while the bottom-mounted button drew some criticism in a TechCrunch review.
