Engadget: Clamshell and Book-Style Foldables Serve Different Everyday Needs

Engadget compares clamshell and book-style foldables, saying each meets different needs as book-style models gain ground.

Engadget described clamshell phones as compact, square devices that flip open from bottom to top to reveal a conventional bar-style phone. The report said current models add an outer screen for messages, calls, time, date, weather, calendar details and, on some devices, more apps. That lets users check information without opening the phone, which Engadget said can reduce distractions. Older flip phones generally lacked such a front screen, apart from small monochrome displays on some early-2000s models, according to the report.

When opened, clamshell phones work like traditional phones with a hinge in the middle, Engadget said. Their smaller bodies make one-handed operation easier than book-style foldables, the report said, but they do not provide more screen space than a regular bar phone.

Book-style foldables open from right to left like a book and reveal a tablet-sized inner screen, Engadget said. Closed, they are similar in size to a traditional bar phone but usually thicker, with an outer screen for messaging, notifications and apps. The larger inner display is intended for video, books, games, web browsing and productivity, including widescreen or split-screen views and drag-and-drop actions, according to the report.

Engadget said book-style phones feel more premium but are larger and bulkier. It also described them as more delicate because of their more complex mechanical designs, and said users should protect the hinge with a case. The report added that book-style devices consume more battery because they power two large screens.

Both formats offer dual-screen advantages, Engadget said, including two-sided live translation and use of the outer camera to preview photos. Both can also stand upright or in a tented position for photos and video calls, according to the report.

Engadget said book-style foldables are becoming more popular and cited research indicating they may surpass clamshell shipments in 2026. It pointed to new models such as the Apple iPhone Duo, referring to its own hands-on, and said buyers are shifting toward premium products with more memory amid a memory shortage. A single device with more memory that works as both a phone and a tablet is an attractive proposition, the report said.

The choice therefore depends on priorities, Engadget said: clamshell phones suit users who want a compact device with glanceable information, while book-style foldables suit those who want a larger screen for media and work. The report said clamshell phones are smaller but offer less power and less screen space, while book-style models provide more screen area at the cost of bulk and battery use.
