Engadget Guide Outlines Ways to Improve Laptop Webcam Quality
An Engadget guide says laptop webcams often look poor because thin lids limit sensor size, but users can improve image quality by cleaning the lens, fixing lighting, adjusting Windows 11 or Mac settings, trying software tools, or buying an external camera.
Engadget says the first step is to clean the webcam. On most laptops, the camera sits where fingers touch when the lid is opened. Fingerprints can blur the image, so wiping the webcam with a microfiber cloth before a video call is usually enough. Household cleaning products can damage the screen, the guide says.
Lighting matters more than most software settings, according to Engadget. Poor lighting can ruin the image even with a good webcam, and most laptop webcams struggle with contrast between light and shadow. Users should avoid sitting with a bright light behind them. Facing a window is better, and a table lamp or LED light in front of the user can also help. The guide names the Elgato Key Light and the Logitech Litra Glow as two popular streaming lights.
If an external light is too expensive or takes up too much room, the computer screen can work as a light. Macs have an Edge Light feature that acts like a ring light on the screen. Engadget says the feature has been available since macOS 26.2 and works on any Apple silicon Mac. Windows does not have this feature by default, but third-party apps such as LightON or Edge Light for Windows can perform the same function.
Software settings can also help. On Windows 11 PCs, Engadget says users can open Settings, go to Bluetooth & Devices, click Cameras and select their webcam. Depending on the camera, they can change brightness and saturation. Those settings become the default in apps that use the webcam. Some cameras also offer Video HDR, which balances contrast between the darkest and brightest areas of the picture.
Some graphics cards have their own webcam enhancement tools. NVIDIA Broadcast uses GeForce RTX cards for features such as noise removal and eye contact correction. For users without an NVIDIA card, Engadget suggests a similar tool called Camo. Mac users have fewer options with the built-in webcam, but they can try Studio Light by clicking the green camera icon in the Menu Bar, which appears only when the camera is in use. Edge Light is available in the same menu, according to the guide.
If none of these tips help and a user relies on the webcam often, Engadget says buying a good external webcam may be the best option. A high-end camera can be used as a webcam, and an iPhone can also be used as a Mac webcam.
