Engadget Guides Explain Common Alexa Fixes and Yellow-Light Alerts

Engadget guides explain common Alexa fixes and what the Echo yellow light means for users.

The first guide said Alexa problems often have simple solutions, even as the service has expanded across Echo Dots, Echo Shows, Echo Auto, Echo Buds and the new Alexa+ rollout. Engadget noted that some users rely on Alexa to control lights, sound systems, televisions and security systems and to run Routines, so small faults can have a large effect.

For users whose Alexa does not understand them, Engadget recommended setting up Voice ID through the Alexa app under More, Settings and Account Management, or saying “Alexa, learn my voice.” If Alexa is too talkative, users can enable Brief Mode or change Alexa’s personality style to Brief; the guide said both can also be turned on by voice. If normal conversation keeps activating the device, users can choose a different Wake Word from a preset list in Device Settings.

When multiple Alexa devices are present and audio plays from the wrong speaker, Engadget suggested creating room or device Groups in the app and naming the room in a command. For an unresponsive Alexa, the guide advised checking for background noise first, then looking for a solid red light that indicates the microphone is muted and pressing the mute button to unmute. If muting is not the cause, users can unplug the device for a few seconds, restart the router if Wi-Fi is poor, or ask Alexa to check for software updates.

The second guide focused on the Echo light ring. Engadget said a yellow light that appears in slow bursts every few seconds means Alexa has a message or notification, not an error. The notification system, introduced in 2017, can alert users to breaking news, calendar reminders, package shipments and price-drop alerts, the report said. To clear the yellow light, users can ask “What notifications do I have?” or “What messages do I have?” and then use commands such as “next” or “repeat.”

Notification settings can be edited in the Alexa app under More and Settings, Engadget said. Users can toggle notifications for features, services and apps; manage missed reminders by asking “What are my reminders?” and then dismissing, snoozing or rescheduling them; and adjust Skills notifications under Skills & Games. The guide also said alerts from connected smart cameras or doorbells can be managed in Device Settings, including person and package detection announcements.

Engadget described other light colors as status signals: cyan for listening, processing or software updates; teal-blue for waiting for a command; spinning blue for startup or restart; red for a muted microphone or disabled camera; orange for setup or internet connection; green for an incoming call or Drop In session; purple for Do Not Disturb mode or Wi-Fi setup problems; and white for volume level.
