Engadget Links Evening Wi-Fi Slowdowns to Congestion, Offers Workarounds
Engadget: evening Wi-Fi drops stem from shared bandwidth and crowded airwaves; router resets and band splits can help.
The publication said the problem typically appears after work or school, when many people in the same area try to stream video, make video calls or play online games. With cable internet, congestion rises because many houses in one neighborhood share bandwidth. Fiber internet offers greater bandwidth and is less affected, according to the report.
In large apartment complexes, dozens or hundreds of devices may compete for the same Wi-Fi frequency bands, adding to slowdowns. Engadget suggested power-cycling the modem and router as a first step: unplug both for at least 30 seconds, plug them back in, wait for the modem to reconnect, and then restart the router if it is a separate device. The process forces the equipment to clear caches and seek fresh, potentially better connections, though faster speeds are not guaranteed.
Users can also create separate SSIDs for each router band and move data-hungry devices to 5GHz or 6GHz if they support it, the report said. The 2.4GHz band is popular, long-range and prone to congestion because of how its channels work, and it can suffer interference from appliances and Bluetooth devices. Engadget recommended reserving 2.4GHz for smart-home accessories, which need range more than speed.
The report said users may need to change habits. Software updates should run overnight rather than immediately; automatic updates can help because many platforms choose windows based on usage, but users can also schedule updates or check manually before bed. Large file downloads, torrenting and cloud sync operations should be avoided when family members are online, according to Engadget.
Postponing bandwidth-heavy activities by an hour or two may be enough, the publication said. It cited streaming a newly released episode of a popular show at launch or playing online games such as PUBG or Galactic Racer while school-aged children are still awake as examples of activities that may be better delayed.
For devices that do not need mobility, wired Ethernet can provide a more stable connection for gaming and faster downloads on computers, Engadget said. Ethernet avoids range and band-congestion problems, though running cables to the router is the main concern. The report noted that wired connections will not solve general internet traffic issues.
