Engadget: Most iPhone Always-On Display Shutdowns Can Be Fixed in Settings
Engadget says iPhone Always-On Display shutdowns often stem from intentional conditions, Low Power Mode or Focus modes, and most adjustable causes can be fixed in Settings.
Engadget reported that Always-On Display is available on iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. The feature is enabled by default, and users can check or toggle it by going to Settings, then Display & Brightness, then Always On Display.
Some shutdowns happen because of conditions the guide describes as normal. The display will turn off if the iPhone is face-down, obstructed from view, or not near a paired Apple Watch, typically because the user has left the room. Engadget also said the front-facing camera should be cleaned so it can see the user clearly, and the feature may shut off if the phone is not interacted with for long periods.
Other situations are more disruptive but still part of the design. The display turns off when the iPhone connects to a CarPlay session to minimize driver distractions, and while Continuity Camera is in use, presumably to conserve battery, according to Engadget.
Two common causes can be adjusted: Low Power Mode and Focus modes. Engadget said users can toggle Low Power Mode from Control Center or, on an iPhone 15 and later, open Settings, select Battery, then Power Mode, and turn Low Power Mode off. On an iPhone 14 or older, the setting is found under the main Battery menu.
On newer models, Engadget also suggested switching off Adaptive Power in the same Power Mode menu. The guide said Adaptive Power can automatically switch Low Power Mode back on when battery falls below 20 percent. Users have to decide whether they value the convenience of Always-On Display or maximum battery life more, according to the article.
Sleep Focus is another setting that blocks Always-On Display by design. To make sure Sleep Focus is off, Engadget said users can open Control Center, tap Focus, and choose Sleep if it appears selected. The Health app can automatically turn on Sleep Focus at a set bedtime, and the guide said this can be disabled by opening Control Center, tapping Focus, tapping the three dots next to Sleep, selecting Settings, scrolling to Schedule, selecting Next Schedule, and turning off the toggle next to Schedule or choosing Schedule and Options to adjust the schedule.
Other iPhone Focus modes let users choose whether Always-On Display stays enabled. Engadget said users can open the desired Focus mode's settings, scroll to Focus Filters, select Add Filter, and under System Filters select Always On Display and make sure it is turned on.
If those steps do not solve the problem, Engadget recommended toggling Raise to Wake under Settings and Display & Brightness if the phone screen wakes too aggressively when touched to check the Always-On Display. The guide also said restarting the iPhone can clear up temporary hiccups.
