Engadget outlines the best ways to update Windows 11 GPU drivers

Windows 11 users can update GPU drivers via built-in tools or manufacturer companion apps, according to Engadget.

The publication notes that opening Settings, going to Windows Update, and clicking Check for updates will fetch available driver updates. Another built-in route is to open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, double-click the GPU, open the Driver tab, and select Update Driver. Engadget cautions, however, that Windows Update has not always handled GPU drivers well and may install a version that is several releases behind what the manufacturer offers.

For users who want the latest performance improvements and bug fixes, Engadget recommends downloading drivers directly from the GPU maker. After determining whether the graphics card is from AMD, Intel, or NVIDIA, users can check for installed companion software in the Start Menu. If it is missing, they can download the NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Graphics Software from the manufacturer's website. Once installed, the software normally detects the graphics card and alerts the user to newer drivers.

In the NVIDIA App, users can click the Drivers tab and then Download if a newer version is available. With AMD's Adrenalin app, clicking the settings cog, choosing Manage Updates, and using the AMD Install Manager can handle pending updates. Intel Graphics Software has an Install All button for driver updates. Engadget says it is normal for the display to flicker several times during installation, and a restart is not always necessary but can be performed.

Manual installation is also possible, especially for users who need a specific version or do not want to run companion software. Searching for the GPU's exact model name plus "drivers" and following the link to the official AMD or Intel website is one route. NVIDIA users can go to the company's Driver Updates page, search for their product, and download a Game Ready Driver; the installer gives an option to install only the driver or pair it with the companion app.

The guide notes that using the latest available driver is usually recommended, but a new release can occasionally cause game crashes or performance issues. Windows Update has already begun automatically reverting problematic drivers, but being able to find and install an older driver remains useful for troubleshooting.
