ESPN begins 4K HDR streaming in US on iOS and Apple TV 4K
ESPN begins 4K HDR streaming in the US on iOS and Apple TV, with more platforms planned before the Super Bowl.
According to TechRadar, ESPN and ESPN2 are getting 4K HDR support for events including Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL games, selected live college football games, US Open tennis and marquee events such as the Super Bowl. The update is available now in the ESPN app for iOS and tvOS, TechRadar reported. ESPN said: "This update will deliver clearer edges, sharper colors and smoother movement — all critically important for delivering a richer and more immersive viewing experience for sports fans."
9to5Mac reported that ESPN recently rolled out the upgrade in its tvOS and iOS apps and that ESPN and ESPN2 will begin rolling out in 4K HDR in the U.S. this week. It said the ESPN app shows a new "4K HDR" tag for content that supports the higher-quality stream. The two reports described the timing with slightly different emphasis: TechRadar said the iOS and tvOS update is available now, while 9to5Mac said ESPN had begun rolling it out in recent weeks and that ESPN and ESPN2 would begin U.S. 4K HDR broadcasts this week.
ESPN said the ESPN app on iOS and tvOS will be the first to support the new experiences, with additional connected TV platforms to follow, as well as Disney+ in the U.S. for ESPN Unlimited subscribers. The company also said it will be able to deliver 4K HDR through pay-TV providers, including traditional and digital ones. No details have been announced about which platforms are next, though ESPN said the rollout will continue this fall and that viewers will begin to see 4K HDR badging on streaming devices and in the mobile app.
TechRadar reported that Disney has not announced plans to extend the rollout beyond the U.S., suggesting the company will focus on U.S. consumers first. ESPN said the introduction of 4K HDR is not simply a video codec change. According to TechRadar, ESPN described it as "an important milestone to modernize ESPN’s content distribution pipeline from the ground up," requiring coordinated investment across every stage of the signal chain, from capturing live events with sufficient resolution and dynamic range to decoding the data in the app for display.
ESPN also said: "This new foundation sets the stage for us to deliver best-in-class experiences across both linear and streaming distribution — serving our sports fans. Anytime. Anywhere."
