Europe's AI Skepticism Leaves It Exposed to AI-Fueled Cyberattacks, Analyst Says

Mueller said Europe's traditional skepticism of U.S. innovation has produced conservatism and waiting. He described sovereign cloud as a big topic but also a big excuse, adding that waiting for sovereign cloud is not a good idea for companies doing business globally, as many European countries do. He also said humans cannot compete with AI-based threats.

He acknowledged that humans fundamentally distrust automation. In his view, the answer to security gaps in agentic AI frameworks may be more AI. He cited the Hugging Face security incident, in which an autonomous AI agent carried out an intrusion while defenders later used an open-weight model to analyze the attack after commercial frontier models blocked the forensic material.

Mueller said Europe needs to resolve technology debt accumulated over 20 years as quickly as possible because AI makes organizations pay for that debt. He noted that some companies may not have managed or experienced on-premises solutions, but now they can consume almost all AI from an elasticity perspective.

Constellation Research recently released an analysis of 'agentic AI washing,' a term for companies that claim to integrate more agentic AI into products than they actually do. When Oracle's AI database offerings were tested against Constellation's criteria, the research firm concluded that the portfolio delivered on agentic AI capabilities without falling into that category.

Mueller described a three-year shift in agentic AI. Last year, advanced companies focused on creating the data source and data plane for agents. This year, companies are fighting over the better agentic framework. Next year, he said, will be a renaissance of scaling backend systems, which he called a good message for Oracle customers that have a highly scalable database.

Oracle has long benefited from being a secure transactional database provider, he said, while following a strategy that gives customers a traditional database with the option to take external workloads to a data lakehouse. Database scalability is critical for agentic success because it lets customers upgrade to the cloud when necessary and continue to get value from their agents. Security is needed at every stage, he added.

Mueller said organizations need a selection of models and a playground to determine which ones to use. He said they need to band up with chief information security officers to run red team exercises, including black hat and white hat attacks, to figure out what is happening. He added that if companies believe state actors will spy on them, they need to be quantum safe.
