ExpressVPN 14.3.1 Expands Advanced Protection to All Protocols on Desktop

ExpressVPN 14.3.1 brings Advanced Protection to all protocols on Windows, Mac and Linux, and adds speed test and accessibility fixes.

Advanced Protection had previously worked on desktop only when the VPN was switched on and Lightway or Automatic was selected, TechRadar reported. Version 14.3.1 lifts that restriction. ExpressVPN notes the feature is rolling out gradually, so not all users will see it immediately.

The speed test has been rebuilt to run faster and return more precise results, which is intended to make choosing the quickest server easier. Split tunneling has also been made more reliable for apps excluded from the VPN, and its setup guidance has been refreshed. On Windows, split tunneling no longer keeps scanning for new apps when it is switched off, reducing CPU usage. On Mac, it now leaves DNS traffic alone so it can run alongside Advanced Protection.

Accessibility changes include screen reader navigation for the location list, protocol settings, split tunneling and auto-connect rules. The app also announces connection status and settings changes. TechRadar said this builds on accessibility work in version 14.1.0, an area where its review rated the app three out of five.

Each platform received fixes. On Mac, an issue that allowed Docker containers to disrupt networking while connected has been fixed, and the app can now launch even when there is no network after waking or booting. On Windows, the VPN stays connected when the screen turns off on Modern Standby PCs, and installation is more reliable on ARM64 devices. On Linux, Lightway routing and DNS configuration are improved on systems that use resolvectl, including Pop!_OS, and native desktop notifications have been added.

The Linux changes follow the rebuilt Qt-based Linux app that arrived in late 2025, TechRadar reported. The update is the latest in a busy year for ExpressVPN, after a visual makeover and a stable MCP server for AI tools in June. Users who already have ExpressVPN should receive version 14.3.1 automatically; otherwise it can be downloaded from the company's website. The version number now appears at the bottom of the app sidebar.
