F-Droid 2.0 Leads Shaoshupai’s Latest App Roundup

The F-Droid 2.0 client was developed over more than a year. According to the project, it adopts Material 3 design, including a wave progress bar and dynamic color, and rebuilds the interface into three core sections. The Nearby feature moves to a secondary menu, category filters merge into the home page, and app listings are more orderly than the older version. App detail pages are also more modern, with gradient banners, and the design moves closer to Google Play.

The update also revises search and categories. F-Droid 2.0 refines category settings, including meditation and fitness under entertainment, unit converters and OCR apps under tools, and 17 game subcategories such as strategy, action, and visual novels. Search now supports app descriptions, translated descriptions, and categories, and improves support for CJK characters, which may reduce mismatched results for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean users. Installation is smoother with support for the pre-authorized installer feature. Some legacy functions are adjusted: app disguise is simplified, Tor configuration is changed, and the emergency feature appears only as a placeholder. The update is rolling out in batches, and users can also download packages manually from F-Droid and GitLab.

Another app in the roundup, Liangzhu Zhijian for iOS and iPadOS, turns ancient Chinese buildings into 3D models that users can explore. It offers more than ten viewpoints for each building, allowing users to rotate, zoom, and move from the gate to the hall and then closer to eaves, beams, walls, murals, or suspended sculptures; users can also view the back side that is hard to see in a virtual tour. The app organizes architectural photography into five themes, including form and volume, structure and craft, and restoration and change. In the restoration and change section, users can see Liang Sicheng’s structural drawing of Foguang Temple; in the display and collection section, they can examine the suspended sculptures of Xiaoxitian. Image detail pages include related information and stories. The app currently covers six ancient buildings, including Qianfuan (Xiaoxitian), Foguang Temple, and Nanchan Temple, with more to come. It is free on the App Store.

Rollroom, an iOS film-filter app from the team behind LoFi Cam, adds AI processing to a retro camera format. Its films fall into classic film, AI film, and creative photo paper. The classic films are similar to those in other apps. Ten AI films are available, including Pixel 16, Doodle, 3AM 800, SoftBloom 800, Vice Summer, Bad Draw, Rewind90, Main Cast, Empty Shot, and Aero; they generate AI images after shooting or importing a photo. Doodle extracts the subject and turns a person into lines while keeping the background; 3AM 800 replaces the background with a dark scene and adds bright direct flash; Pixel 16 converts the whole image into a retro 16-bit pixel style. Creative photo paper includes a date-calendar film that combines a monthly calendar with an image and a Color Mini film that makes a Polaroid-style photo and applies smart colors from the image to the paper border. Rollroom is free on the App Store; Pro subscriptions cost $3.99 per week for all classic films and three AI films per week, or $7.99 per month for all classic films and eight AI films per week.

Keyguard is an open-source third-party password manager that supports Bitwarden-based products and can open KDBX KeePass databases. It runs on Android, Linux, Windows, Wear OS, and macOS, with only macOS supported in Apple’s ecosystem. The app uses Material 3 and dynamic color, adapts to tablets and foldables with multi-column layouts, and supports TOTP codes for Bitwarden premium and self-hosted derivatives as well as passkeys. It provides third-party autofill for mobile browsers; on Android 14, Chromium opened this feature, previously limited to Google Password Manager, and Keyguard can take over Chrome autofill without being intercepted by Google’s service. It also includes security audits for sites without HTTPS, reused accounts, unclean items, and accounts that support but have not enabled two-step verification. It can work with Vaultwarden backends for SSH and GPG key storage and supports email forwarding. Keyguard is available from its official website, GitHub, Google Play, and F-Droid with an added repository.

YoungPhoto is an iPhone camera app developed by Korean photographer Seungyun Kim. The developer said the inspiration came from his long-running sharing of photography composition, color, and shooting techniques, which he integrated into the camera workflow so that users who do not know how to compose can follow examples. The app provides real-time composition assistance. After opening the camera, users tap the hash button to enter assisted composition mode, where examples for portraits, travel, and food and templates such as triangle-line and parallel composition are available. After selecting a template, composition guide lines appear in the viewfinder; users adjust people, buildings, food, or the environment according to the lines. Tapping the i button opens a composition guide covering zoom ratio, distance from the subject, light, and pitch angle.
