Ars Technica reported on Sept. 24 that the new client is much more responsive and includes optional support for Android's Material theming. The interface has been cleaned up, making the most important functions easier to access while moving some other options into overflow menus.

The update is largely about making it easier to find and install apps. F-Droid first appeared when there was not much to see in its catalog, but it now has thousands of open source apps, Ars Technica reported. Unlike the Play Store, which is preloaded on virtually every Android device, F-Droid does not track users' taps and installs to push ads and suggestions. It helps users find things and gets out of the way, according to the report.

The team's work on the new client took multiple years. The redesign brings F-Droid's official store in line with current Android development practices, and the changes are intended to make the open source app catalog more usable. Ars Technica described the release as the biggest update in a decade for F-Droid's official app store.
