Fairground launches free AI-generated TV channel on Roku

Fairground Entertainment runs the project and describes the material as “AI Cinema.” The company says its programming comes from more than 100 AI filmmakers. The distinction matters: Roku is not making those films; Fairground curates and distributes selected work from its network of creators.

The channel operates as a FAST channel, or free ad-supported streaming television, meaning viewers watch without paying a subscription while advertising supports the programming. Roku already offers hundreds of free live channels through The Roku Channel, including news, sports, food, reality TV and other categories. Fairground is using that established format for a newer type of programming. Its films also appear on Xumo Play and Canela.TV, and its FAST channels are available across several streaming-TV platforms.

Engadget notes that “AI-generated” can make the process sound simpler than it often is. For example, the Fairground project Lost Garden: The Awakening of the Lantern Knight lists Frank Houbre as the writer of the world, characters, mythology, emotional arc and screenplay. AI tools were used mainly for animation and visual production, with other tools helping create voices and music before the episode was assembled in conventional video-editing software.

Filmmakers can submit projects through Fairground’s creator portal, where selected work may be considered for distribution. A competition tied to the channel’s launch asked creators to submit films in true crime, general AI filmmaking and world-building categories. Winning entries received prize money, placement on the channel and 50 percent of the revenue their films generated through distribution; other submissions could also be considered for distribution and revenue sharing.

Fairground’s stated goal is to get creators’ work onto “the screens people sit in front of,” rather than leaving it on the devices people scroll through. Selected work can become part of an always-on TV channel, changing the distribution situation for independent creators by making their films available through established television platforms. Whether viewers will want an AI-focused TV channel remains to be seen, but Fairground has placed itself in the TV guide and now needs to give viewers a reason to stay.
