Fairphone 6 Plus goes on sale in US as company’s first official handset there

Fairphone’s 6 Plus, the company’s first phone sold directly in the US, is now available for $649.99, with unlocked support for T-Mobile and AT&T and Android 16.

Previous Fairphone models were sold in the US through a partnership with Murena, developer of the Google-free /e/OS Android fork, which forced buyers to use modified software at a higher price. Last year’s Fairphone 6 sold for $899 in the US. The 6 Plus ships with standard Android 16 and includes an in-house gallery app for the first time, according to Android Authority.

The 6 Plus is a mid-cycle refresh of last year’s Fairphone 6, with a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset, 12GB of RAM and the same 6.31-inch OLED display with adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. Storage remains 256GB, expandable via microSD by up to 2TB. It has a 4,415mAh battery with 30W fast charging, and runs Android 16 with software support promised until 2033.

The main camera uses a 50-megapixel Sony sensor with f/1.88 aperture, joined by a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 32-megapixel selfie camera. The Verge noted that the “Plus” name does not indicate a larger display.

The phone retains Fairphone’s modular design with 12 replaceable parts, including the battery, cameras, USB-C port and display. Previous Fairphone 6 earned a perfect 10 repairability score from iFixit, and replacement parts are being sold in the US, from $7.99 for a SIM tray to $89.99 for a display. Almost the whole phone can be disassembled with a single Torx T5 screwdriver.

Fairphone says the 6 Plus is made from more than 50 percent fair or recycled materials by weight, has the company’s smallest carbon footprint at about 30kg of CO2e per device, and is the only fully e-waste neutral smartphone on sale in the US, according to Engadget and TechCrunch. The new Cobalt Blue colorway reflects the company’s efforts to support responsible cobalt mining through the Fair Cobalt Alliance and the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance.

“We’re delivering a device built from the ground up to be opened, repaired, and kept alive for many years,” Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck said in a statement. The phone is available in Forest Green, Horizon Black and Cobalt Blue, along with modular accessories such as a card holder, finger loop and lanyard.

Fairphone also confirmed it will release Fairbuds 2, a second-generation pair of repairable wireless earbuds, in the fourth quarter of this year. The company said the earbuds “will set a new bar for repairability and performance” and plans to reveal more details in October.
