FBI investigates ShinyHunters claim of data theft from jobs website

The FBI is investigating ShinyHunters' claim that it exploited a previously unknown bug on FBIJobs.gov and stole data on thousands of current and former employees and applicants. The group says 2–3 terabytes were taken, including addresses, phone numbers, medical information, and work-focus details; none has been leaked.

On Tuesday, 404 Media reported that ShinyHunters took down FBIJobs.gov and posted a banner on the homepage that said, "THIS SITE HAS BEEN SEIZED BY SHINYHUNTERS." The stolen data included names of current and former agents as well as applicants, home addresses, phone numbers, names of spouses, certain medical information, and other data, according to the reports.

According to Bloomberg, the data could potentially be used to retaliate against FBI agents. One sample appeared to include potentially sensitive professional information on FBI employees' work focus, such as counter-intelligence work on China, Russia, and Iran, as well as work against street gangs.

The FBI is investigating whether the claimed hack is real, and the agency has not confirmed the authenticity of the data. No data has been leaked so far, ShinyHunters told The New York Times.
