Fields Medalists Warn AI Math Race; Apple Defends Foldable Timing

The statement said large language models have recently made rapid progress on open math problems, but AI companies' goals are diverging from the core demands of mathematics. It said the value of mathematics lies in understanding why a proposition holds, developing new concepts and tools, and transmitting knowledge, not merely producing conclusions about whether a proposition is true. If model-generated proofs outpace human understanding, hard-to-digest, hard-to-explain and hard-to-teach results could pile up and strain the training of mathematicians and knowledge transmission, it said. It also cited rushed releases of AI-driven math results, insufficient rigorous review, incomplete citations, and authorship or attribution disputes. The signatories did not reject AI's auxiliary value but opposed reducing major conjectures to leaderboard scores.

The warning followed OpenAI's Sept. 8 announcement that an undisclosed internal model had solved the existence and smoothness problem for the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the Millennium Prize problems, and published a 166-page paper. The result is awaiting strict verification by mathematicians worldwide. OpenAI chief research officer Mark Chen and researcher Sébastien Bubeck said the work consumed millions of dollars in compute, about 1,000 times the compute used for earlier mathematical results.

Apple CEO John Ternus and global marketing senior vice president Greg Joswiak, in an interview with TechRadar, defended the company's later entry into foldable phones. Ternus said Apple's timing standard is whether a product meets its requirements for quality, durability and design. Ternus said his reaction on first seeing the design was 'Yes, that's it.' He also said he never treated 'iPhone does not need a stylus' as a real rule, and the 7.6-inch unfolded screen gives Apple Pencil new use cases.

Microsoft plans to raise its global data center capacity from about 12 GW now to more than 38 GW by 2032, Bloomberg reported. The count includes Microsoft-built and long-term leased capacity, but not temporary compute rented from some newer cloud providers. People familiar with the matter said recent compute shortages have forced Microsoft to turn down some AI and cloud business. The plan may still change with demand, power supply and construction schedules, but it gives an internal measure of Microsoft's expected compute needs over the next six years.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and eight other departments released the 15th Five-Year Plan for the intelligent connected new energy vehicle industry. It targets new energy passenger vehicles at 70% of new passenger vehicle sales and new energy commercial vehicles at 40% of new commercial vehicle sales by 2030, with autonomous-driving vehicles entering large-scale application. Average fuel consumption for passenger vehicles should fall to about 3.3 liters per 100 km, and average electricity consumption for battery electric passenger vehicles to about 11.5 kWh per 100 km. Highways, urban expressways and some urban roads are to achieve highly automated driving. The plan sets out 17 tasks in five areas, four major projects and three key actions, covering key technology, safety systems, AI plus automobiles, and application promotion.

ChangXin Memory Technologies' earnings before interest and taxes margin rose to 82% in the second quarter, according to internal data cited by Nikkei. That was above SK Hynix's 76% and Samsung's semiconductor business's 70%. ChangXin's revenue in the period was about 10 times that of two years earlier. Counterpoint Research data showed ChangXin had 10% of global DRAM revenue in the second quarter, up 4 percentage points year on year and 2 points quarter on quarter. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron had 38%, 25% and 24% respectively.

Oracle reported revenue of $19.345 billion for its fiscal 2027 first quarter ended Aug. 31, with GAAP net income of $4.679 billion. Cloud remained the main growth driver: cloud revenue rose 62% year on year, and cloud infrastructure revenue rose 121%. Oracle said contracted but unrecognized revenue continued to increase and it would expand data center capacity to fulfill contracts.

Zhipu, also known as Z.AI, launched about $2 billion in new share placement in Hong Kong and simultaneously issued about $3 billion in convertible bonds, Reuters reported. The two transactions are not conditional on each other. The placement includes 21.97 million new shares at HK$714 each, about a 10% discount to the Sept. 11 closing price. Proceeds will be used for research and development, compute and related infrastructure, as well as business expansion, strategic investments, potential acquisitions and daily operations.

IDC data for the second quarter of 2026 showed global x86 server shipments of 3.853 million units. Lenovo shipped 286,000 units, ahead of Dell's 256,000, rising from third place a year earlier to first. By vendor revenue, Lenovo ranked second with $8.26 billion and 9.0% share, while Dell led with $8.83 billion and 9.6%. The gap narrowed from 3.4 percentage points in the first quarter to 0.6 points.

Shanghai Enflame Technology listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market on Sept. 11. It publicly issued 43.035173 million shares at 142.18 yuan each and opened at 410 yuan, up 188.37% from the issue price, giving an opening market value of more than 170 billion yuan. Enflame develops cloud AI chips and related software and hardware. Because it is not yet profitable, Enflame was included in the STAR Market Growth Tier from listing.

Tesla launched the Model Y Performance all-wheel-drive version in China at 369,000 yuan. It has a CLTC range of 659 km, 0-100 km/h acceleration of 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 250 km/h, 21-inch wheels and adaptive dampers. Xiaomi also launched the YU7 GT the same day at 389,900 yuan, with 1,003 PS combined power, 0-100 km/h in 2.92 seconds, a 101.7 kWh battery, 705 km CLTC range, dual-chamber air springs and adaptive dampers.
