Firecrawl raises $75M Series B, launches Alexandria data service

Firecrawl raised $75M in a Series B led by Smash Ventures and launched Alexandria, a cloud service for AI agent web data.

Firecrawl sells tools intended to make web data easier for AI agents to collect. Although agents can theoretically use a regular browser, gathering large volumes of website data involves technical challenges. Firecrawl says its platform addresses those challenges for developers.

The platform includes an agent-optimized search engine that can filter webpages by creation date, file type and other parameters. Firecrawl says the tool is more efficient than search engines designed for human users. Traditional scrapers often download pages before all loading phases are complete, producing data quality errors, while Firecrawl says its smart wait feature avoids that problem. The platform can also automatically scroll, click interface elements and submit forms, and developers can customize those interactions by entering prompts that describe what the software should do.

Firecrawl can extract key details from PDFs, Word documents and other files that it says are difficult for traditional scrapers. It can monitor webpages for changes; a software-as-a-service startup could configure it to track updates to a rival’s product pricing page.

The new cloud service, Alexandria, combines web data with information from third-party providers and datasets curated by Firecrawl. One dataset contains tens of millions of scientific paper abstracts, and another includes a similar number of code and documentation files. AI agents can use Alexandria to fill gaps in web data. A programming assistant, for example, could enrich code examples from a developer forum with explanations from one of Firecrawl’s curated technical datasets.

Agents have other ways to combine data from multiple sources, but those approaches often require developers to build a custom connector for each source. Firecrawl says all Alexandria data is available through a single application interface, reducing the need for custom code.

Firecrawl said it will use the new funding to enhance the service. Much of the capital will go toward adding information from more third-party data providers, and the company plans to launch a self-service content licensing system soon to expedite the process.
