Firefox 157 to Enable JPEG XL by Default on All Platforms

Mozilla will enable JPEG XL decoding by default in Firefox 157, bringing the format to all platforms and following Chrome's support.

Firefox Nightly currently has JPEG XL support enabled by default to help vet the implementation, and Mozilla believes the support is in good enough shape for a stable debut with Firefox 157, Phoronix reports. This follows Chrome shipping JPEG XL and Google Research developing jxl-rs, a Rust-based JPEG XL image decoder.

In a Mozilla Hacks blog post, the company detailed the differences between JPEG XL and AVIF. JPEG XL excels at lossless imagery, progressive rendering, and further compressing JPEGs without quality loss, while AVIF excels at web-quality photographic images and images with a mix of sharp edges and flat surfaces. Although AVIF tends to produce smaller files than JPEG XL at web quality, AVIF only has basic progressive rendering support, so for very large images, it may be worth taking the file size hit with JPEG XL.
