Firefox 158 Arrives With JPEG XL Enabled by Default

Firefox 158 is out with JPEG XL image support switched on by default, adding image/jxl to the browser's Accept header, plus faster Smart Window form filling and CSS typed arithmetic for developers.

The release also adds JPEG XL to Firefox's default image Accept header, improves Smart Window form filling, and introduces new CSS typed-arithmetic support for developers.

With the change, JPEG XL becomes an accepted alternative to formats such as WebP, JPEG, PNG and GIF in the browser. The default HTTP Accept header for image requests now includes "image/jxl" for the JPEG-XL image format. Earlier releases of Firefox had kept JPEG-XL behind an experimental option that users had to turn on themselves.

On the user-facing side, Firefox 158 supports filling forms faster in Smart Window when a user clicks into a form field or selects Fill from sources.

For developers, the browser now supports CSS typed arithmetic, which allows functions such as calc() to divide two values of the same data type even when they are expressed in different units.
