Firefox Rolls Out Rounded Redesign and Revives Compact Mode

Mozilla is pushing a redesigned Firefox to desktop and mobile users, with rounded tabs, a new address bar, fresh themes and the return of Compact Mode, The Verge reports.

The release follows beta testing earlier this year and marks the first time the desktop and mobile versions of the browser share the same design language. According to the report, Mozilla said the changes come with "no cost to your browser performance."

Mozilla described the overhaul as a "renewal" for Firefox, arriving after a year of updates that added home page widgets, Split View, a built-in VPN and controls for disabling the browser's AI features. The company has not stepped away from AI: it launched a Smart Window AI mode earlier this year, which The Verge noted could help it compete with AI browser features offered by rivals such as Chrome.

The rounded interface elements also make Firefox look somewhat more like Chrome, according to the report.

The redesign expands customization options, including additional themes and wallpapers. Mozilla previewed some of the new theme choices in May, offering a dozen colors, each with a light and dark mode.

Alongside the design changes, Firefox 157 restores Compact Mode, an older feature brought back after user requests. The condensed version reduces the size of tabs and the toolbar so more of the screen is available to web content, and it includes an auto-compact option for smaller screens.
