Five ChatGPT tools to set up before back-to-school, from Study Mode to quizzes

Study Mode is the most accessible starting point. Activating it in any chat by typing @study or selecting it from the menu shifts ChatGPT from giving direct answers to asking Socratic questions, offering hints, and checking comprehension at each step. Users can upload problem photos or class notes, then ask the AI to teach a lesson based on those materials. For example, a prompt may request teaching derivatives one question at a time or using uploaded notes to identify and explain concepts before quizzing.

The College Student plugin, available only through ChatGPT Edu, offers a more structured toolkit. It can turn uploaded lecture slides into interactive visual explanations, create study websites with practice questions and feedback, and build two-week study plans by course deadlines and quiz performance. Its availability depends on whether a university subscribes and enables the feature.

Uploading a syllabus can give it a longer life than the traditional first-week read. ChatGPT can convert a syllabus into a week-by-week plan, list every test and paper deadline, suggest what to prepare at least a week in advance, and flag busy weeks. Users who enable alerts can avoid an end-of-semester crunch.

Flashcard creation is another time-saver. Rather than spending an evening writing cards, students can ask ChatGPT to generate cards from notes, focusing on confusing terms and asking for one card at a time to turn the output into a real study session. With the College Student plugin, flashcards can become part of an interactive learning experience organized by topic.

To test true learning, ChatGPT can generate practice questions and quizzes. In Study Mode, users can request a 10-question quiz based only on their notes, with one question at a time, answers revealed only after responding, explanations for mistakes, and difficulty that increases with correct answers. The College Student plugin can build a more structured interactive quiz around course sources, including practice exams and analysis of weak areas for further study.
