Former Rockstar dev says GTA 6's Jason 'seems quite deadpan and monotone' and hopes for more personality

Former Rockstar developer Mike York says GTA 6's Jason appears deadpan and monotone in the gameplay reveal, and hopes Rockstar gives him more personality, with Lucia possibly serving as a contrast.

York, who previously worked on Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, said Jason appeared to move around "very slow and methodical," almost like a "robot" or "a Terminator," and showed very little emotion. He compared the character with earlier GTA protagonists, particularly Grand Theft Auto 4's Niko Bellic. York called Niko a "great character" and one of his favorites in the series, saying he was "witty and had some great lines." He said he hoped GTA 6 would present Jason in a similar light.

"I hope we see more of that because right now, Jason seems quite deadpan and monotone," York told TechRadar Gaming. "Rockstar usually gives us a bunch of neat characters who are funny and have their own flair. I don't know if we're going to see that with Jason, but I hope we do."

Jason is one of two lead characters in GTA 6, alongside Lucia, his partner in crime and girlfriend, depending on player choices. York suggested Lucia could contrast Jason's subdued personality. From the extended gameplay footage, Lucia appears livelier than Jason and sometimes takes the lead in certain situations. York agreed that, as switchable characters, Lucia could serve as the yin to Jason's yang.

"I think that's what they're going to do," York said, pointing to a trailer scene in which the duo arrives at the Effluvia rooftop bar. In an elevator, Jason says, "Sometimes I'm just more comfortable when I have to use a gun." Lucia replies, "Just be charming!" York said Lucia has an attitude that suggests she is trying to break Jason out of his shell, and described her as the one who probably goes into missions "gung-ho, all guns blazing."

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The company has also said the game will run at 30fps on consoles at launch.
