Framework Laptop 12 gets Intel Core Series 3 chips, other upgrades

Framework has updated its entry-level Laptop 12 with Intel Core Series 3 processors, optional backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader, and improved battery life, starting at $699 for pre-built Linux models.

According to Engadget, the new Framework Laptop 12 comes with Intel's Core Series 3 processors, including Core 3, Core 5 and Core 7 options paired with 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB of RAM respectively. The company said the new chips bring efficiency benefits similar to those seen in the Framework Laptop 13 Pro, with the Core 5 model demonstrating 70 percent better battery life while streaming Netflix compared with the Core i5 version of the original Laptop 12.

The updated laptop also supports Thunderbolt 4 on two of its four hot-swappable Expansion Cards and faster DDR5 RAM. While the display remains unchanged, buyers can configure the Laptop 12 with a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader. Pre-built Core 5 and Core 7 models running Linux include both features by default.

Framework said over 80 percent of original Laptop 12 owners are running Linux, so it decided to offer the new model pre-installed with Fedora, with Windows 11 available as a $100 upgrade. The company also said the new hardware has been seeded to other Linux distros to ensure support when the laptop ships.

The Framework Laptop 12 starts at $699 for a pre-built Linux configuration in green, or $549 for a DIY version in black, gray, light purple, pink or green. The DIY option offers more flexibility, with the ability to equip the laptop with up to 48GB of RAM for an additional $659. Pre-orders are open now, with shipping planned for October.
