A free, open-source tool called Paperwork helps Linux and Windows users tag, label, and search documents locally, according to ZDNet.

The tool supports importing files in formats such as PDF, DOCX, and ODT. Paperwork is a local-only application, meaning it does not upload documents to any third party. When a user imports files, Paperwork makes copies in the ~/papers directory and does not alter the originals. After importing, users can select a document, open its properties, add keywords and change keyword colors, then apply the changes. The application also includes scanner support, PDF support, auto-detection of page orientation, OCR, document labels, auto-guessing of labels for new documents, search, keyword suggestions, and quick scan edits.

Search is described as a strong feature. Users can search by file name or for strings within the document body. For example, a writer who cannot remember which book in a series mentioned a certain phrase can type that phrase, and Paperwork will highlight the matching words. The search tool also allows filtering by label or date by selecting from a Keywords dropdown, and users can combine multiple criteria such as keywords, labels, and dates to narrow down results.

Paperwork can be installed on Windows using an installer downloaded from the official site. On Linux, it can be installed through the distribution's package manager or via Flathub. Commands given include "sudo apt install paperwork-gtk paperwork-gtk-l10n-[language] paperwork-shell -y" for Debian or Ubuntu, and "flatpak install flathub work.openpaper.Paperwork" for Flatpak. After installation, the launcher appears in the desktop menu.

ZDNet's review noted that Paperwork organizes imported documents by date and attempts to auto-label them. The automatic labels were described as "mostly off," with the tool adding a Documentation label to every document that is not a PDF, which the reviewer removed manually. No macOS version is available.
