Freelander 8 Launches from 309,900 Yuan, Standard Dual-Motor AWD and Rear-Wheel Steering

Freelander's first model, the Freelander 8, launched on Sept 3 in China, priced from 309,900 yuan, featuring dual-motor AWD and advanced safety.

The Freelander 8 measures 5,118 mm long, 2,050 mm wide, and 1,898 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. The six-seat layout uses a 2+2+2 configuration, and the third row features footwell recesses, seat heating, independent air vents, and USB ports. All versions come standard with a 60.3 kWh ternary lithium battery from CATL, providing a CLTC pure electric range of 310 km. The vehicle is built on an 800V platform with a peak charging rate of 6C. Standard comfort features include a 46.3-inch panoramic screen, a 15.6-inch central display, a 17.3-inch rear ceiling screen, a 23-speaker Audio Vivid sound system, and a 10-liter cooler.

Even the entry-level PRO trim is equipped with dual-motor all-wheel drive and a two-speed rear motor, producing a combined 610 kW and 813 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds. Closed twin-chamber air suspension, continuously variable damping, ±10° rear-wheel steering, and six-piston front calipers are also standard across all trims. The PRO and MAX versions feature Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 enhanced edition with an in-cabin lidar-vision Limera solution, while the MAX+ upgrades to a super edition with an 896-line dual-optical-path lidar and a rear solid-state lidar, totaling 30 sensors.

The MAX trim adds what the company calls "three locks" for all-terrain capability: a front mechanical differential lock, rear e-LSD, and a digital center lock. It also includes full-grain NAPPA leather, real aluminum trim, suede headliner, and active side support for the driver's seat. The MAX+ focuses on intelligence and comfort, adding the super-level ADS 5, magic carpet preview, RNC active noise reduction, third-row seat ventilation, ISD interlocking headlights, 22-inch wheels, zero-gravity seats, and foldable tables.

The cabin of the Freelander 8 features a light-colored leather dashboard with horizontal lines, a 46.3-inch screen running beneath the windshield, and a central 15.6-inch display. The newly announced ENLIGHT OS is described as a "human-like brain operating system" based on a full-modal on-device large model. It uses vision, voice, environment, and vehicle-side information to actively perceive scenarios and understand people, objects, and relationships. In demonstrations, the system could ask whether to open the trunk when seeing a passenger carrying luggage, learn new faces after owner confirmation, and dim lights or close screens when a child falls asleep.

The system includes a "hippocampus memory module" supporting over 300 memory tags and more than 25 agents that can control over 1,700 vehicle functions. According to the report, the large model is deployed on-device, with personal data and in-car conversations stored locally and not uploaded to the cloud. The vehicle also features adaptive airbags that adjust deflation rate based on occupant size and side-view mirrors that extend outward to reduce blind spots.

For off-road capability, the Freelander 8 is equipped with an i-ATS intelligent all-terrain system that uses cameras and lidar to recognize road surfaces up to 10-15 meters ahead. In intelligent mode, it can identify six terrain types and adjust powertrain and suspension parameters within 0.5 seconds. The vehicle offers nine all-terrain modes. A separate AI decision model uses over 500 vehicle parameters to estimate actual speed on slippery surfaces such as gravel, sand, mud, and ice.

The company highlighted a safety test in which a production vehicle was rolled down a slope with a maximum gradient of 70%, a length of 26 meters, and a drop of 15 meters. After the rollover, the A, B, C, and D pillars remained intact, airbags deployed, all four doors could still open, and electrical components functioned. The battery was then reconnected and the tires replaced, allowing the damaged vehicle to continue driving through S-curves, off-road sections, and steep climbs. The brand drove this battle-worn vehicle onto the stage at the launch event. The body stiffness is rated at 43,000 Nm per degree, with 90% high-strength steel and aluminum, and the vehicle is fitted with 11 airbags.

The Freelander 8 also completed a Guinness World Record on August 22 by driving to the highest altitude of 6,002.33 meters in a hybrid vehicle, according to the report. The range extender uses high-altitude compensation to maintain power output in low-oxygen conditions.
