From Hi-Fi Engineering to MUJI's Budget Headphones: SSPai Publishes Two Audio Takes

SSPai posts two audio stories on Sept. 3: one explains hi-fi as measurable engineering, and the other reviews MUJI's MH1 headphone, calling it a capable but unremarkable budget option.

The Matrix essay opens with the author recalling how they once viewed audiophiles as people who might seriously claim that hydro power sounds better than wind power. After digging into the chain from song to eardrum, the author says digital audio must first pass through a DAC, or digital-to-analog converter, which turns discrete samples into a smooth analog waveform. That waveform then goes through an amplifier, where voltage and current are increased enough to push a headphone driver. The article describes why impedance and sensitivity matter, how a “small dongle” is actually a compact DAC/amp combination, and what clipping means when an amplifier runs out of headroom. None of these steps, the writer concludes, belongs to mysticism.

The article quickly adds that many suspicious-sounding claims in hi-fi culture are not baseless. Analog paths can pick up noise, grounding differences, cable resistance and even the positioning of speakers or players; these variables give sellers room for exaggeration. A central issue, according to the essay, is information asymmetry: makers usually have test data and know their products' defects, while buyers are left with vague phrases such as “wider soundstage” or “darker background.” The word “sound quality” itself is used to cover different concepts, from low distortion to a particular tonal preference. The essay notes that frequency-response graphs can tell a listener something about a headphone's balance, but no single graph ranks sound quality completely.

The second SSPai piece, from TDS Studio, is a hands-on review of the MUJI MH1, an over-ear Bluetooth headphone from a company better known for everyday lifestyle goods than for digital audio. The reviewer used it intermittently over a few months and describes the packaging as predictably MUJI: two layers of brown cardboard in the shape of the headphone, with only a USB-C-to-A cable inside. It comes in a gray or a warm off-white color and is a large on-ear model that most people will not be able to fit their ears entirely into. The headband combines metal and plastic, but the cushion is a thin rubber strip that does not do much to relieve pressure.

The MH1 puts all controls on the body. A left-side button toggles noise canceling; double-pressing it switches between music and game low-latency modes. The right side hosts power and volume keys. The review says there is no app, no wear detection, no firmware update path and no transparency mode. Noise-canceling depth is shallow, mainly suppressing low-frequency hum; passive isolation is comparatively good because of the tight fit. In signal tests using AAC, connection stability stayed solid at 9.5 meters with a load-bearing wall in between. Official battery life is 35 to 58 hours at 60 percent volume, and five minutes of charging gives about five hours of playback.

Listening with ANC off and AAC engaged, the reviewer found a bass-heavy tuning with abundant low-frequency energy but little layering, vocals placed close but slightly metallic, and highs lifted at two peaks before rolling off early. The soundstage feels artificially widened but not deep. The write-up's overall judgment calls the MH1 a usable entry-level product that fits MUJI's minimalist aesthetic but stays within ordinary material and sound standards; it is not worth a special trip, and a live trial at a nearby MUJI store is the better path.
