FromSoftware president hints at return to single-player games after multiplayer releases
FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki says the back-to-back multiplayer releases weren't planned and hints at a return to single-player games after The Duskbloods.
Miyazaki, who directed Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls, told IGN that releasing two multiplayer games one after another was not intentional. "It's funny because there was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other," he said, explaining that Nightreign was led by a different director, Junya Ishizaki, and both ideas "just coincided with being multiplayer games."
Miyazaki added that the studio still has "a heavy focus on single-player content" and that the recent multiplayer projects are not a signal of a permanent shift. "It's not necessarily some big reveal saying that this is the direction we plan to go moving forward," he said. "This is just something that happened to work out the way it did."
He then suggested that working on multiplayer for a long time could actually make developers want to return to single-player games. "But it's like, the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time, if anything, it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again," Miyazaki said.
FromSoftware's last single-player experience was Elden Ring, which launched in 2022, followed by the multiplayer spin-off Nightreign in 2025. The studio's next title is The Duskbloods, a PvPvE action game announced as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Network tests are underway, but no release date has been set.
