Galaxy Z Fold 8 Owners Report App Scaling Issues on 4:3 Inner Screen

Galaxy Z Fold 8 owners report app scaling issues on its 4:3 inner screen; aspect-ratio settings offer a workaround.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at its Unpacked event in July. The phone’s App Continuity feature lets users switch between displays without interruption, but the expanded inner screen can complicate how apps adapt to a device whose aspect ratio changes depending on how it is used. Some owners have run into problems with apps that do not scale correctly to the internal 4:3 display, and they have convened on forums to discuss possible fixes.

Engadget described aspect ratio as the proportional relationship between width and height, such as a square’s 1:1 ratio. The setting is relevant because many apps are designed to work across different phone and tablet screen sizes but may not automatically adjust to the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s inner screen.

According to SamMobile, cited by Engadget, users can change an app’s aspect ratio individually. After unfolding the phone, users can go to Settings > Display > Aspect ratio; depending on the One UI sub-menu, the path may also be Settings > Apps. From that screen, a user can select an app and choose full screen, 4:3 or 16:9. The screen notes that apps running in the background might need to restart after the aspect ratio is changed. The selected option becomes the default aspect ratio for how the app opens.

A second method is to press and hold the app icon and tap the small info button at the top right, then tap App aspect ratios and choose the default ratio. Even after a preferred ratio is set, an app might not scale perfectly to the screen. Some users have reported awkward positioning or cropping if the app itself has not been optimized.

Engadget’s review of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 praised the main screen’s 4:3 ratio, partly because it cuts down on letterboxing around widescreen content compared with the more square internal screen on previous Galaxy Z Fold models. The publication said the improved screen may be worth the trade-off of dealing with apps that occasionally misbehave.

Editor's Summary

Some Galaxy Z Fold 8 owners are dealing with apps that fail to scale properly on the phone’s 4:3 inner display. Engadget and SamMobile point to per-app aspect-ratio settings as the main workaround, though unoptimized apps may still show cropping or awkward positioning. The reports follow Samsung’s July launch of the foldable and describe software adjustments users may need to make.
